Safe Environment
In order to get a good sleep, it’s important that you feel safe. Common safety items should be installed in your home. If you have your home covered, it will prevent you from waking up for the smallest sound.
Fire Safety
Ensure there are smoke alarms on each floor and outside all sleeping areas. There are some you can buy now that if one goes off, they all go off. This is great if a fire starts at the other end of the household. Make sure all family members know what to do during a fire situation and where they should exit.
Carbon Monoxide Safety
CO detectors can be placed near the ceiling or near the floor as CO is very close to the same density as air. You can buy a combination one with smoke detector. Also, part of the same system that sets off the other alarms.
Personal Safety
Ensure all windows and doors are locked. Keep a lamp beside your bed in case you need a light in a hurry. Try to have a telephone also close to where you are sleeping, in case of emergency. A dog is also a good choice if you are nervous about intruders.
Child Safety
Ensure that there are gates on all stair ways for young children. They can develop sleepwalking or wake during the night. Sometimes gates sound cheesy….but they work.
Other Safety tips
Night lights are a great help, especially if your loved ones wake up during the night to use the bathroom. Usually, people are still half asleep, but at least they can see where they are going. I know my dad, a grown man, has fallen down the stairs trying to reach for a light switch…unfortunately, he was reaching over the stairs and fell down.
