Regulating Sleep

It’s important for your bodies metabolic systems that sleep is regulated to specific times each day. For instance going to sleep at the same time and waking up at the same time. For years, I always thought that I needed 9 hours of sleep myself. However, I read an article once, forget where, and it revealed that I was really over sleeping and causing myself to be lazier in the morning than I should have been.

Personally, I would always go to sleep at 10:00pm. That was my “bed time.” My alarms would be set for 7:00am. Yes, I would be tired by 10 and most days have difficulty waking up at 7. But, I almost never needed an alarm clock. If I wanted to wake up at 7, I would just wake up. Anyways, in the article it read said that most people were oversleeping. I began observing myself in the morning. I would usually wake up sometime before 7, usually around 5 and then go back to sleep. This happened almost every night. I had a bit of an “aha” moment. So one day, I decided that if I woke up early, I would just get up then, instead of waiting for my alarm.

For the first few days it took a bit of motivation to kick myself out when I woke up. But when I did wake up, I was wide awake and raring to go. That kind of surprise me. Since before, when I was waiting for my alarm, I would keep waking up, check the time and think, “great, I can get some more sleep.” When I woke up then, I was tired and didn’t want to get out of the comfort of my own bed.

By waking up right away, I have interestingly found that I have more energy during the day. It also gave me a few more productive hours and “alone” time, since everyone else was still sleeping. Also before those extra few hours, my body wasn’t moving, or burning hardly any calories. But now, sometimes, I will do a work out. I don’t have the opportunity to do normally, because I have a 4 year old, who only wants to help, and a 10 month old who just wants to grab onto my legs. In combination, those girls give me a bit of a hard time if I want to work out.

Back to regulating sleep. If you find you have this problem, give it a try. Wake up when you wake up the first time and get yourself out of bed. But try to maintain a schedule. I still go to bed at 10:00pm myself, but wake up two hours earlier than before. If you think you are oversleeping, give it a try.

If you find yourself constantly tired during the course of the day, try more sleep, or try a nap time. I know it is difficult in this day in age to change our schedules since they revolve around so many things. But if you wish to increase your health, you must get the right amount of sleep.
