What external factors are going to cause you to fall back into your patterns. Your children? Your spouse? Your co-workers? A specific time of day? Stress?


You need to identfy these so that when the time comes, you will have a plan in place to overcome your usual behaviour. If stress causes you to smoke or over eat, develop a plan in the case of stress. What can you do so that if stress arises, you will not fall back into your pattern. Would it be possible to go for a short walk? Perhaps you could listen to some calming music for a few minutes? Try to remove yourself from the situation.


Sometimes it is not possible to remove yourself. I have kids and sometimes they drive me crazy…I use to get some chocolate. I cannot remove myself because I have a small baby. So what I have learn to do instead is to take a few minutes to myself, not necessarily leave the room, but sort of go into a meditative state, screaming children and all (it was difficult, but now easy to slip into). I take a few minutes to calm myself and try to understand why they are acting in such a manner.


Usually, I realize that I either expect too much of them, or that they do not understand why they can’t do something. It is not what they are doing that is causing me to feel stress, but it is my reaction to what they are doing that is causing me to feel stress. If I simply change my reaction, the stressful feeling goes away.


Figure out what situations will inevitable happen to you will you are trying to accomplish your goal and develop a plan for that situation. That way when the time comes, you will be well prepared and be able to act quickly, before you drop back to your old ways.
